But, not every beginner can attend yeshiva.
Even those who do may have only one or two years there—while nuanced learning skills take much longer to develop.
A life in transition
Those are years of enormous personal transition.
New learners are adjusting to new beliefs, practices, relationships, and community expectations.
They may not yet be ready to work on nuanced Gemara skills yet.
Ready—but busy
By the time they are ready, life has changed.
Work, marriage, children, and community fill the day. Serious learning may need to happen in windows of twenty or thirty minutes.
And even when there’s time, resources for beginners to build real skills can be few and far between.
What is lost
Many give up on ever really learning Gemara.
They use summaries or translations, and never develop an authentic connection with the text that forms our basic understanding of Jewish law, history, and values.
An unidentified gap
Other learners spend years in yeshiva, but still feel stuck.
Gaps developed in their formative years hold them back, while their peers continue forward without them.
Ready for rigor
Others come with substantial secular education.
They are prepared for complexity and rigor, but text skills prevent them from engaging at their intellectual level, so they find Gemara unfulfilling.

Hi, I’m Azriel.
I started learning when I was 25.
I learned in Machon Shlomo, Torah Ore, Edison, and Ner Yisroel.
It took a lot of years to figure things out.
It could have been a lot smoother with different resources.
A dedication
Hisbonen is dedicated to my Rebbe, R’ Dov Zemmel z”l.
R’ Dov Zemmel z”l was a close student of R’ Chaim Pinchas Sheinberg. He and his Rosh Kollel R’ Yaakov Frankel shlita initiated many students into a nuanced and rigorous style of learning.
Hisbonen is based on my imperfect understanding of his approach, from the years that I learned with him.
